Expensive? Yes, they CAN be. You can cheap out too.
F-150 XL regular cab 6.5 foot bed and 5.0 V8 2WD: $27,015
Add 3.5L Ecoboost which requires the 8 foot bed for some reason and add $700
4WD is a $4,645 option (yikes)
Super Cab is $2,790
Crew Cab is $5,080
So a 4wd F-150 XL with 3.5L EcoBoost and crew cab is $38,635 BEFORE we even add in any other packages. We can max it out at $46,725! For a base model XL....
Click off the Platinum edition and every available option and you can go over $62K USD for a HALF TON PICKUP.......
Let's not even get started on a Super Duty....... $72 grand!!!!
For info purposes, you can get a stripped out Ram 1500 with 5.7 Hemi for about 23K as well.....
Keep in mind these are MSRP prices and you will PROBABLY wind up paying MSRP or close to it for a bare bones model because what dealer keeps them on the lot?
Options are a huge markup and where they can haggle.

A corowrker of mine bought a Ram Express 1500, the short bed regular cab Hemi with the black package and he paid $20,000 about a year ago. I just found out and am mad he didn't tell me. I don't need a truck yet, but for that price I would have considered it instead of my FoST I bought within a month of him.
BaconSandwich is tasty.

Options seem to be where the companies make their money.
On a slightly related note, how often do people pay MSRP? I can't imagine dealers going much below it on a brand new model.

Yup, those are a steal. If I had known I would have put the wife in one. She wants a pickup badly.
